1926 Heckscher Playground

The first modern playground in Central Park is constructed with funds donated from the family of the philanthropist August Heckscher. A four-acre portion of the original Playground is fenced off to enclose a wading pool, separate activity areas for boys and girls, and a common play space. Structured activities and state-of-the art play equipment are introduced, including swings, gymnastic equipment, and seesaws. A recreation building with restrooms and program space is also constructed.
